After graduating high school, Joey and his family set a goal for him to live independently. As his family was already constructing a shed on their property, they decided to attach a living space for Joey, giving him a place to call his own. To ensure a smooth transition from living with his parents to managing his own household, Joey worked with BCFR to create goals in areas like cooking, cleaning, laundry, and shopping.

Syd Blasczyk, community skills specialist (CSS), focused on enhancing Joey’s cooking skills, guiding him through various recipes and helping him gain confidence in the kitchen. Joey quickly learned to prepare meals such as Hamburger Helper and shrimp.

Community Employment Specialist Kiah Wright worked with Joey on mastering laundry and cleaning. These skills were essential as Joey adapted to the new responsibilities of independent living. Joey took pride in his ability to cook his meals and maintain his living space.

“I do my dishes now,” Joey shared. “I barely go over to my parents’ to eat dinner anymore.”

Living independently also gave Joey the freedom to make his own decisions, like staying up late to watch his favorite shows or inviting friends and family over. His nephew often
spends weekends with him, and Joey enjoys having his own space to host visitors.

As Joey took on more responsibilities, his confidence grew, and he became more engaged with his community, spending time with friends and participating in social activities. Joey has not only adjusted to his new life but has also thrived in it.

“Throughout the year I’ve watched Joey bloom,” said Support Coordinator Susan Thompson, who has seen a noticeable difference in Joey. “Joey speaks much more confidently, meets with his CSS or myself independently and comfortably without feeling like he needs parental support. The Joey I met in 2023 had a goal of living independently and in less than a year, he’s made that goal a reality!”
